The 1000 Journals Project is an ongoing collaborative experiment attempting to follow 1000 journals throughout their travels. The goal is to provide a method for interaction and shared creativity among friends and strangers.

I launched the project in August of 2000, and it has since reached 40 countries and every US State. The project has resulted in a book, a feature-length documentary, and an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

We walk by them day after day. They blend into the backdrop of the city, living a life on the streets. This project was aimed at raising awareness of the rising number of homeless in San Francisco. Each sign is made with found cardboard and hand stitched, then framed and hung in places frequented by those who sleep on the streets. Passersby are reminded that for some, the cement is a bed, the streets are home.

It began with the planting of small yellow flags of freedom... recognized throughout the world as a symbol of all that is good. As their popularity increased, people downloaded templates and made their own, spreading the love and resulting in hundreds of photos. With millions of page views and images passed around the internet, a little criticism was bound to happen... Click on Quotes to see just a few of my favorite responses.

I am continually influenced by what I see on the street. Telephone poles with years of flyers stapled to them, a rusting graveyard of events past. The homeless man who sits and reads near my studio every day since I moved in (the one day he wasn't there, I became worried).

My work is an extension of these things, repurposing torn paper into graphic structures inlaid with chaos, or exploring my, and the average person's relationship, with the homeless. I seek to make people think, consider, and even question their preconceived beliefs about topics such as war, politics, and the economy.

Most projects include a public, or participatory component, while at the same time having foundations in the individuals moment of discovery. What is their reaction upon seeing a pile of feces with Bush's smiling face sticking out? Or making the connection between "Home Sweet Home" and "Home Street Home" while observing someone sleeping on the sidewalk? All the while, no answers are provided, and often, people are left to determine the meaning of the message. Except the Bush flags, that one was kind of obvious.

My work has received international attention and been covered extensively in the media:
